Important changes to the solid waste collection schedule are starting on October 29, 2012. These changes will extend the live of Ottawa’s landfill and will ensure the efficiency and cost effectiveness of Ottawa’s garbage, organic waste and recycling programs. Streamlining collection will save taxpayers millions of dollars per year and result in fewer trucks on our streets.

Here is how these changes will affect our households:

Collection Day Change

Beginning the week of October 29, 2012, recycling and garbage will be collected from our homes on Mondays. A new collection day is necessary to ensure a more efficient solid waste program city-wide.

Bi-weekly Residual Garbage Collection

Beginning the week of October 29, 2012, household garbage for Central Park will be collected with the blue box every two weeks. Please maximize recycling to minimize the amount of garbage you produce. You can place out an unlamented amount of recycling each collection day.

Please check the 2012-2013 Collection Calendar for more information about the Central Park collection schedule. A collection calendar was delivered to each mailbox early in September. If you have not yet received it, please visit ottawa.ca or call 3-1-1 or 613-580-2400 to request one. Collection calendars can also be picked up at any of the City’s customer service centres.

Green Bin Collection

Green bins will be collected every week. Please visits ottawa.ca/recycle for tips on how to get the most out of your green bin by putting the most in your green bin.

Need a new green bin, black box, or blue box?

If you are missing one of your recycling boxes or require another, you can find out how to get a replacement from the city website ottawa.ca.

Waste Explorer

Not sure what waste should go where? The city has a Waste Explorer that will tell you what bin it should go in.

Household Hazardous Waste

If it’s corrosive, flammable or poisonous it’s hazardous waste. These types of products contaminate water and landfills and should never be poured down the grain or put out with regular garbage. Instead, it can be taken to one of the city’s specialty depots.
